October 26, 2009

If you are looking for options that can help you to renovate your bathroom, there are many things to consider. The design of the bathroom is the worth considering thing. Particularly, the fittings and the furnishings of it are what you must keenly check.

It is one of those that can greatly affect the room’s looks and functions. It is important because they can either make it look dull, clinical and plain or beautiful, unique and elegant. According to your requirement you can choose one that can meet your requirement and pocket as well.

A large number of options of wall tiles are available in the market today. Among them you can choose the best tiles for your bathroom. In this regard, best tiles are the ones that can complement the bathroom’s fixtures and must blend well with its overall theme or design.

Renovating the bathroom is not an easy task. Some people like traditional designed tiles while others look for getting the contemporary design. However, the motive of these two groups is the same that is to renovate their bathroom in an innovative and refreshing way. Here the question arises, what options do you have for bathroom wall tiles? And what should you get among those options?

Ceramic, glass and stone tiles are the options that are classified according to the materials used. From where you can choose the one you are looking for? Among them ceramic tiles are the widely-used tiles. They are cost-effective and durable which is perfect for a bathroom due to the amount of moisture in the room. In comparison to ceramic tiles, glass tiles are more expensive. While stone tiles, which can either be marble, granite or slate, are the most costly ones. These tiles are more porous though making them prone to stain.

Without any doubt, these three common options for bathroom wall tiles are sufficient to fit in a modern bathroom design or theme. Here, it is not compulsory that an expensive tile can help you only to adorn your home in your own way. A cheap and good looking tile can also fulfill your requirement coming with affordable prices. Their design and colours patterns must also be considered.

Are available in various colours, sizes and design patterns. Among them black and green tiles are the ones that are commonly using these days. Furthermore, if you have decided to stick black tiles in your bathroom, you should avoid covering your bathroom with it as it can make it look dark. There are also tiles that come with pictures and hand painting. While using these tiles, always avoid overusing them as they can make your bathroom look busy and overloaded.

Therefore, there are numerous ideas that can apply to achieve the modern look that you want for your bathroom. But always among these options, you should try to choose the ones that can complement you bathroom giving it a translucent look. An excess utilization of tiles can make your bathroom dull and imbalanced. Hence, use them in a proper way after consulting with an interior designer.

Lots of us just do not have the money to go out and enjoy leisure outside of our homes so lots of folks are beginning to entertain themselves and their relatives the old-fashioned way, right there in your very own living room. When you have got relatives coming over, you need your house to look well turned-out. Impress your work colleagues with designer chairs that will leave a permanent effect.

When your home looks good, you feel superior. You appreciate that it makes you grin to saunter into your home and know that it is pleasing to others. There are so many distinctive kinds of designer chairs available these days that will deck out your modern living space and make it feel like a pleasing, enjoyable place to enjoy with your relatives.

You can acquire designer chairs in a varied array of sizes. When you’re going to be purchasing new furnishings for your home, you should make a start by establishing just what your needs are. If you determine for definite that you require numerous chairs, decide if you require them all identical or if you favor an diverse group that works in a good way all together. Decide the total number of people you need to seat and make certain that you’re purchasing a sufficient amount to bring in everyone, even that chance unannounced guest that no one anticipated.

If you’re used to entertaining guests, get chairs that suit who they are. There is not much point buying a group of dainty chairs if your sister regularly visits with 4 children. Also make sure that the designer chairs that you’re purchasing are comfy. It’s definitely smarter to buy a bigger, stronger chair than have somebody who may be at risk of breaking it.

You don’t have to spend tons of money to find a Tasteful designer chair. See what you can find on clearance. There’s zero unsuitable with these splendid looking chairs, normally they are simply at a sale price due to newer models being introduced. No-one I know can afford to switch their furniture several times a year, when the new models are launched, so no one would even know.

Take a glimpse around your house or the area that you’re going to be furnishing. When it is time to purchase a new chair or chairs, you may be ready to give the space or your complete abode an overhaul. Make a decision what fabrics work best with your existing furniture if you intend on making a few small additions rather than a whole transformation of your home. Full, deep fabrics beside subtle and airy ones can look dire unless you have a well developed eye for mixing styles and designs. If you want selective chairs and it is your first effort at furnishings, make sure you ask for assistance from someone who works at the store where you are buying your designer chairs.

Think about what types of occasions you’ll be having that people will need the chairs for. If you like to ask family over regularly to play games, watch football or see a movie then get fabric which will wear well. If you’re expecting extreme traffic and utilization of the chairs, make sure that you go with a darker neutral color or ask about getting your new designer chairs scotch guarded against spills and stains. There’s nothing worse than having fresh furniture destroyed by one small mistake.

You may want to stay away from a few fabrics and colors, as well, if you own pets. Take into account the fact that your pet could claw the chair before you buy them. If you buy light colored designer chairs, be ready to have pet hair show up. If you are not too keen on continuously cleaning your new furniture, you may want to go with a neutral tone that won’t display the fur.

When you have offspring, you will want to obtain designer chairs that are solid and impervious to lots of jumping and bouncing if your offspring are young. You can come across something sturdy yet gorgeous that will complement your interior decoration and serve the functions that you need it to, just about anyplace. When you want the luxury designer chairs, be sure to put side by side prices and styles before making a conclusive judgment.

Get Magnificent Leather Sofas For Your Apartment

October 18, 2009

Superior to any other furniture type, leather in particular leather sofas give a plush look and experience that will surely add to any rooms look. It is however recommended that you dedicate due consideration to the never-ending assortment of styles, colours and functions of each sofa, before you make your definitive conclusion when purchasing one of these fine sofas. The subsequent article will help you select the perfect leather sofa to match not only your funds but in addition your good taste.

Years ago, choosing a leather sofa was very limited, being either awfully high-priced or very tricky to come by, but with the continual changes in the technology in terms of manufacturing such objects, then came cost cuts and improved ease of possession. Today, we can pick from reclining and sectional sofas, sleepers and masses more, accessible in an endless variety of sizes.

Furniture that is adjustable is preferred in todays market, customers no longer need to be constrained to simply one position. Reclining sofas are changeable in height and angle to make sure of total coziness. Of the many different types of sofa available, reclining sofas are absolutely the number one choice among consumers and come in assorted styles and sizes, some with big, cozy arm rests while bigger versions will have enough space to seat several people as well as supply extra arm rests. These can be built up from only a pair of seats to as many seats as you require, you are therefore not restricted just to one.

For those that strive for room, sectional sofas can be a good resolution. This furniture can be split up they can then be sited in various places round your apartment and can be re-made into a lone piece when necessary. Sectional furniture is great for smaller homes such as apartments or holiday cottages.

Sleepers are commonly broad and designed to seat minimum 2 couple with ease, varying from twin to full and queen sizes. Just like sectionals, sleepers are ideal for restricted areas such as small apartments or homes with not many rooms available. Visitors can spend a cozy night on the sleeper then when its morning, merely roll the bed back into its initial form, to appear like a average piece of furniture.

When it comes to leather you clearly need to decide on the right colour to match up the residual furniture in your apartment. It’s therefore recommended that you select a natural top grain leather due to the fact that it’s the most tough of all materials. Keep to mind that this furniture may be more costly but if you pay out on best quality models, you need not have to care about replacing them within a couple of months.

Natural top grain leather can last for up to 30 years, until it begins to become worn, restoration is easy as a low-cost solution will be offered at your local furniture stores. As you can picture leather furniture has come a long way and has been manufactured to be handy. You will consequently need to appraise your house to establish precisely which type of sofa will fit your home best.

Protective coating is another very essential factor. Aniline leather is drum dyed, which allows for entire dye soaking to ensure a full, dark colour. No protective coating is added whatsoever and is deemed the softest, and most costly type of leather.

Protected Aniline leather is also drum dyed and a very minute amount of coating applied. This gives the leather just a little guard against fading and spills when compared to ordinary aniline leather.

// [AD]

Pigmented leather comprises merely of colour applied to the leathers’ surface. The leather is not dyed all the way through. Pigmented colour will not be equally as dark, the finish provided is then again greater against scratches, marks and fading. These leathers are less pricey and not as soft as dyed leathers.

Whilst shopping for leather sofas it is extremely vital for the style to correspond with your tastefulness and more prominently your life. If the sofa will be used in a hectic room such as a lounge which gets a lot of traffic, go for a heavier finish and protection so that you can just wipe off any blotches. Price shouldn’t reign supreme as a major weight because leather will stay fresh so long that there’s a lot of worth in it. Finally, you need to make sure it’s pure leather and not a combo of vinyl and leather. No doubt two materials look good together, they don’t essentially wear the same, with the outcome that the leather will outlast the vinyl.

Dress Up Your Bedroom

October 18, 2009

So you’ve finally moved into the new place, and most everything is unpacked and in its place. Your bedroom has a lovely new comforter with matching shams and coordinating curtains, but something is missing. There’s no warmth. You know, the cozy feeling you get when you walk into a room and it feels like home.

Outside the temperatures are dropping and more than ever you want your bedroom to be comfortable. Not just a place to sleep, but a haven for your well deserved quiet time. If your room tends to be on the cool side, cut the chill with an electric fireplace. They’re available in all different sizes and styles and along with providing extra warmth, help to create an inviting atmosphere.

Adding subtle aromas instantly effects your mood and senses as you enter a room. Air fresheners, scented sticks or burners are all simple ways to accomplish this. Eucalyptus, lavender evoke a calming feeling, vanilla or cinnamon take you back to mom’s home baking, and pine fragrances have more of an outdoor effect. A fresh bouquet of flowers, especially in the dead of winter, helps to absorb stale air and create a welcoming feeling.

When it comes to bedding, pick out a set you really love and use it as your focal point. Add coordinating pillows, shams or bedskirts, and spend the extra money for a thick duvet or mattress pad. You’ll be spending a considerable amount of time in your bed, make it comfortable and inviting.

If you have hardwood or other solid flooring, accessorize with a corresponding area rug to warm up your tootsies.

Window coverings should cover enough to give you privacy and keep out the bright morning sun, but also provide warmth and character. If you have blinds, add some sort of fabric in the form of side drapes or a valance. Shades made from a contrasting fabric also does the trick.

// [AD]

Place a comfortable chair in the corner of the room with a lamp and small table. Ideally, place in front of a window with a view. This is your getaway, for reading, meditation or just spending a few moments to yourself.

Hang photos of friends and family or reserve a drawer or box for special souvenirs that you can look back on from time to time. With most of our pictures being digital these days, electronic photo frames make lovely accent pieces that you’ll never tire of watching and adding to over the years.

When it comes to lighting, how many bedrooms do you see with a single overhead fixture stuck up against the ceiling intended to light the entire room? Strategically place floor lamps or sconces in areas where you’ll be reading. Vary the lighting depending on your mood with dimmer controls. If your bed is the focal point, recessed lighting near the head of the bed with separate snooze controls can be very effective.

To accent artwork or different areas of the room, track lighting is extremely flexible and easy to use.

Music goes a long way to creating a relaxing atmosphere; whether it be for background music, waking up or dozing off to sleep. Every bedroom should come equipped with a stereo or IPOD stand just for this purpose.

How to use picture frames in interior Design?

October 16, 2009

We all have seen paintings being used in our home interiors. They
play a major role when it comes to decorating an interior space.

There are basically two types of frames, first are the photographs
captured using a camera and others are hand drawn sketches or
paintings. There are two major aspects to a picture frame, the
frame itself and the subject of the picture.

When it comes to the subject of the picture a vast majority and
almost infinite subjects are available to choose from. Photos or and
drawn pictures of birds, animals, natural beauty, people, portraits,
birds, scenery, architecture, cityscapes, mountains, oceans and sea,
geometric shapes, non-geometric shapes, abstract shapes, strokes,
flowers, interiors, vehicles, and a whole lot more…can be “framed”
to form a beautiful picture frame.

When it comes to choosing the exact subject of the picture frame,
one must recognize the surroundings of the interior space, location
where the picture frame is going to appear, the quality and
dimensions of the wall surface where the picture frame will appear.
It is always not true that the picture will be put on the wall.
Sometimes small frames standing on the table can greatly add the
liveliness of a room.

It is important to consider that we are going to use the painting as
a “filler” on the wall. The space on the wall, which is empty, gets
filled up with interesting array of colors present in the picture.
Colors attract the attention of the visitor and creates moods in
his/her mind.

Let’s see an example of how a picture frame creates moods in our
mind. Here I use 4 photographs of kittens and frame them to for
picture frames to use on an empty wall in my bedroom. I locate
these frames such that I see them prominently when I enter the
bedroom. The real life photos of kittens instantly create a soothing
and compassionate feelings in me which are in tune with how I feel
in my bedroom sleeping on my bed.

On the other hand if I use a photo of the “Ford Mustang” , my
feelings would be more of a alert nature because of the various
memories attached to it previously. On the other hand if I use the
Ford Mustang photo in my study room, that would greatly help to
warm up the atmosphere.

That’s why subjects that create a soothing mindset such as natural
beauty, photos/portraits of children, etc.. can be used where the
human activity is of low nature such as bedrooms, bathrooms, etc..

There is one more element that can affect the choice of a picture
frame in an interior space. The “design theme” of a space must be
given importance while selecting the picture. If the interior design
theme is of oriental nature, then picture with more use of colors will
look good. This is because in an oriental design style more
emphasis is given on “decorative elements” such as drapes,
conices, tiny plaster treatments, window and door frames,
decorations in brass, etc..

To enhance the continuity of this theme on the empty wall surface a
painting with more detailed subject should be used. Picture of
natural scenery is best suited for this, because “nature” is full of
variety of colors and their shades, that can greatly enhance the
beauty of the space.

A little creative thinking can add some more interest to the picture.
For example what if I totally remove the frame which holds the
picture intact and “press” the picture between two glass plates.
Only metallic clamps at the four corners can be used to hold the
glass plates together. Artificial light used in the room will then cast
a shadow of the picture on the wall behind and can add “depth” to
the picture surface.

Picture frames with the ability to replace the picture is a good
starting point. This give s to control to test what’s good and
impressive in your room. This article was just a starting point to
ignite the imagination in your mind. I hope it has helped you and
you have enjoyed the text.

An overview of commonly used materials in interior design

October 16, 2009

Every interior space has some unique qualities attached to it. If you
have visited a natural outdoor space like a forest, you will notice
thousands of varieties of “textures” in the form of wooden barks,
leaves, ground surfaces, stones, water etc…

All these natural elements create a unique visual effect and all
visual effects have a corresponding effect on human mind. That’s

why when used carefully textures can create wonders in interior
design.

The most commonly used materials in interior design and
decoration are wood for furniture, cloth for linen, rubber/leather for
flooring or upholstery, paper as wallpapers, plastic for accessories
like lampshades and other decorative items, steel for furniture.

Let’s take a closer look at these materials and their textural
qualities.

1) Wood….

Most commonly used for furniture, door frames, shutters. The main
reason behind this is it is easy to work with wood. The art of
carpentry is an age old profession. Because of the nature of wood
like softness and the same time the amount of strength it can
withstand, makes it a popular choice amongst furniture designers.

A fully polished wood surface gives a very rich finish and projects
user friendliness. Also wood comes in many varieties and colors,
each having its own pros and cons.

2) Cloth….

A very natural choice for linen. Since a cloth finish is a smooth one
it is most suitable in a bedroom where comfort is a very vital factor.

The biggest advantage of various types of cloth is that most types
are washable so maintenance is easy.

Cloth has one more important quality that it can be “painted” for
expressing detailed decorative patterns, that can greatly add to the
beauty of the space.

It is also possible to do “embroidery” on cloth, if painting is not a
good choice or budget doesn’t allow. Depending upon the weave of
the cloth strands the thickness, transparency, etc. can be easily
achieved. This makes the cloth most suitable for various kinds of
uses such as linen, curtains, bed sheets, etc…

3) Rubber/Leather….

Rubber is used in the form of PVC flooring, is easily available and
most importantly is wash proof and durable. It can be printed upon
using design patterns of any style, rich with colors. Comes in the
form of large sheets or even individual tiles.

Unlike tiled flooring the PVC flooring is much less affected by
atmospheric changes. Other types of tiled floorings or even wooden
flooring can have a direct effect on the surface because of the
expansion and contraction of the flooring material. A PVC flooring is
glued to the tiled flooring I hope you have benefited from these
words.

4) Plastic….

There are infinite uses of this great material. The only disadvantage
environmentalist have pointed out that it is not bio-degradable.

Because of its artificial nature it can be “manufactured” in various.
colors, shapes, sizes, strength. The biggest advantage of plastic is it
is waterproof and electrical shockproof. That’s why mainly used for
electrical accessories. It is lightweight as compared to other
material types. Entire furniture pieces such as chairs, tables
can be easily molded out as a seamless model in plastic.

5) Steel/Iron….

Steel is mostly used in interior design where the main purpose is
to give support and carry weight to the floor. That’s why main use
of steel is done to create the structural frame that carries the
weight of the people who are going to use the furniture piece.

A very common type of steel is the “Stainless Steel”. Because of its

shining nature, it very quickly gives a rich quality to the object
being used on and enhances the overall quality of the interior
space.

Furniture objects that have been designed with a combination of
wood and steel look much balanced from aesthetic point of view.

But doing so requires a careful study of the joiner details, especially
where wood and steel joint together.

The following discussion was only a brief introduction of the types of
material being used in interior design industry. Every day more and
more good quality and cheaper material types are being presented
in the market. I hope this article was informative to everyone.

How to use wall finishes in a bedroom design project?

October 14, 2009

Dear friends, any interior space is composed of some primary
architectural elements such as walls, floor and ceiling. Depending
upon the type of structural framework, the construction method
would change.

We always see experience and perceive any interior space in
elevation. This means that walls are the first things of any structure
that create an impact on our mind. The quality and volume formed
because of the walls define an architectural structure.

When we enter a building, what we primarily and dominantly
perceive are walls. Let’s see how walls can be used as an excellent
element in a bedroom design project.

1) Exposed Brick walls.

In order to use these kind of walls it is necessary to preplan the
interior design schedule. Normally if a brick wall is to be kept
exposed (without plaster), it is built with high quality bricks which
are machine cut for high quality and accuracy.

Since bricks have their own color and texture, this option can be
used to create a color contrast by keeping only one wall exposed
and other with a contrasting color. This can add some interest in the
bedroom.

2) Exposed plaster walls.

An exposed plaster wall is a wall which has not been painted.

These kind of walls are very rarely used in interiors. Since the
plaster is a composite material using appropriate qualities of
cement, sand and aggregate, the final material has a dull color. A
dull color on a space like bedroom would express a kind of
depression, hence is not recommended.

But portions of a wall with preplanned design and sketching can be
used in association with exposed brick wall. Design pattern with
partly colored and partly exposed plaster can be a good idea.

Or a completely exposed plaster wall with a design patter in grooves
can be used effectively.

3) Wall with tile cladding.

Tile cladding is what we see in kitchen above the cooking platform.
Tile cladding is also used in bathrooms and toilets. These are
normally ceramic tiles.

In a bedroom interesting patterns can be created to fake the
exposed brick wall mentioned above. Many excellent patters can be
used just like a jigsaw puzzle.

4) Paintings.

The word painting has two meanings here.

a) A wall with plane colors applied to it. This is done above the
plastered surface of the wall. Two or three coats of the desired
shade of the color and base material are applied.

b)Secondly, instead of using plane colors, the entire wall can be
used as a “canvas” to paint a story or mural. This is a very good
method to paint children bedrooms. Walls can be used as a
storyboard to create interest.

5) Wallpapers.

Applying a wallpaper is an excellent way to quickly change the look
and feel of the bedroom. Depending upon the “theme” of the room
many wallpaper patterns are available.

Wallpapers are very good in large bedrooms. In large bedroom
“emptiness” is a big problem. If there are not enough decorating
elements available, a room might look empty. Here wallpapers can
serve as fillers and quickly add some interest in the room.

6)Textured plaster walls.

These kind of walls need special techniques to create a textured
pattern on walls. Once a texture is applied any shade of paint can
be used.

One of the great thing about these walls is, when sunlight falls on
them, a very interesting play of light and shadows gets created.
Because of the undulations in the surface of the plaster, small
shadows form on the surface of the wall, giving it a visual quality.

A wall in the bedroom which receives direct sunlight should be
chosen for this purpose.

This article shows you how various options to the existing wall
finishes are possible, that can enhance the quality of the
bedroom interior space.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.

A Study of Furniture Elements For Smaller Bedrooms

October 14, 2009

When we enter any bedroom the first thing we notice is the
furniture. All humans always see interiors and all decorating ideas
that are executed in “elevation”. This means we always see the face
of the furniture.

Every object in the bedroom large or small has a direct relation to
dimensions of the human body. This relation with our body decides
the comfort level in a bedroom. If a double bed is oversized, it will
naturally occupy more floor space by reducing the volume of empty
space. That’s why proportions of every furniture piece are vital to
maintain comfort levels.

Let’s examine some important factors about bedroom furniture
units.

1) Double Bed….

This piece of furniture occupies the maximum amount of floor
space. A typical double bed measures about
1800mmX1800mmX450mm height. Of course this is a comfortable
sized bed but can vary depending upon the requirements at the
interior site.

Double beds come in steel/wrought iron/wooden frames. The most
important point to note here is that 80% of the structural
framework gets covered by linen. The mattress, bed sheets, pillows
cover most of the part that supports the load of the users. That’s
why the real beauty of a double bed lies in the linen used. Linen
defines the shape of a double bed to some extent.

The patterns and decorations used on the linen also ads to the
overall design theme of the bedroom. The headboard of the double
bed (the part of the double bed which stands behind the head when
we lie down on the bed) is a prominent feature and can be used
effectively by using semi-circular shapes.

One creative use of the headboard is that we can add artificial
lighting in it by providing blur glass and the effect of indirect
lighting can be created. This is helpful if the master wants to read a
book or magazine by relaxing in the bed itself.

Most of the time we see that the space below the mattress is used
for storing linen. This is done in the form of sliding drawers which
slide out from sides.

I have seen one more creative way of supporting the platform
where the master lies down. By giving an angular slant to the
supporting structure of the bed we can save valuable circulation
space in a small bedroom.

2) Wardrobe….

A wardrobe is another element in a bedroom that creates a
significant impact on the entire interior design theme. We always
see a wardrobe in elevation. A typical wardrobe is most of the times
measures 2100mm in height. The length and depth of the wardrobe
differs from location to location but is typically around 1200mm in
length and 600mm in depth for a single person’s wardrobe.

The internal compartments of a wardrobe are divided keeping in
mind the various styles and sizes of clothes we wear. The internal
design of a wardrobe also depends upon regional influences. For
example in Japan, women wear a typical kind of dress or in Indian,
most women wear a dress code called as “Saree” which needs much
more space similar to trousers.

Depending upon the requirements a wardrobe might also include a
small “money safe” with locking arrangements, drawers for keeping
smaller sized clothes such as under-garments.

3) Dressing Table….

A dressing table is a place to be happy about. This is the place
where we spend a lot of time shaping our faces. A small bedroom
may not have enough space for a dressing table. At such times the
outer faces of the wardrobe can be used to fix a full height mirror.
This also creates a reflection of the rest of the room it and thus
creates an illusion of more space.

A wardrobe needs special spotlight arrangements to throw light spot
on the person in front of the mirror. This will include a flat mirror
and small storage spaces for the makeup-kits, perfumes, etc…

In a case where the mirror is fixed on the outer surface of the
wardrobe shutter,(as mentioned above) the storage space for
make-up kit can be arranged inside the wardrobe.

4) Study Table with extra storage desk….

A study table is just a place to do some important daily tasks
Sometimes it is useful to keep a computer on it. This study table
can be designed to include an elevated storage space for
books/files.

This combination of a study table and a book shelf is a great way to
save space in small bedrooms. If the table top in not occupied by a
computer or other objects, it can be made to fold and thus
increasing more floor area.

This was a very basic study of the most commonly used furniture
items in a bedroom. There are hundreds of creative ways to
improve the performance and efficiency of furniture items in interior
design. This article was just a starting point to trigger the creative
genius in you.

I hope you have benefited from these words.

5 Essential Factors Of a Good Bedroom Design

October 14, 2009

Dear friends, successful design is a relative term. What is good
or successful for me may not be so from your point of view.

But when it comes to interior design, there are certain factors which
are always present no matter what the use of the space is. Let’s
have a look at the bare minimum design factors a space must have
so that it can be called a comfortable and habitable space.

1) Proportions of the room.

The word “proportions” is always used in the design field. Every
interior space which is being used by humans must be
proportionate. Proportions are extremely important in any design.

Every 3 dimensional object has properties such as length, width and
height. When these 3 are in accordance with the proportions of
various parts of human body we call it a “proportionate” design.

For example a handle of a wardrobe must have dimensions such
that our fingers can hold it properly for effortless and smooth
action. or a chair seat must have enough are so that we can sit
comfortably. Again the type of seating will change the dimensions of
the chair. A chair in waiting lobby of a bank will be different than a
sofa.

So proportions play a major role in interior design and furniture in
your bedroom must also follow these rules. The dimensions of the
double bed, it’s height from floor level, height of wardrobe,
dimensions of dressing table, etc…all these matter as far as
function is concerned.

2) Natural light entering the room.

There is no alternative for naturally lit spaces. Sun being the
strongest source of light and also helps to keep the biological
balance of the planet Earth, it is very much necessary in the
interior spaces.

Study shows that natural light can penetrate in an interior space up
to 20 feet (Approx. 7 meters). Using appropriate position for
window opening can easily achieve this.

3) Natural Ventilation

A free and unobstructed flow of air can be a great way to keep
the atmosphere cool and clean in an interior space. This is possible
where bedrooms are located at the corner of the building where 2
sides of the bedrooms have external faces.

Where it is not possible to provide windows on adjacent faces or
opposite faces, a ventilator above the window is used. The concept
behind the ventilator is simple. The lower half the bedroom height is
always used by the habitants. Because of the constant use of this
are the air temperature rises and air becomes light weight.

This hot air rises above and must need an escape. At such times
ventilators above the window openings play a major role of
circulating the flow through the room in an upward direction. When
the lower portion of the room becomes empty fresh air from window
takes its position, thus maintaining a balance.

4) Clear Movement Patterns.

Every bedroom has certain exit points attached to it. Such as

a) Exit to balcony/ terrace.

b) Exit to toilet block/ walk in closet

c) Exit to backyard (if on ground floor)

If we draw an imaginary line from the entry point to all these
exit points, ideally the should not intersect. Since all other
areas are already occupied with furniture, keeping the inside
circulation space clear, helps to achieve a comfortable
space.

5) Good Provision For Inclusion Of Accessories.

Accessories in a bedroom have equal importance. When all other
factors mentioned above are fairly met what remains is the use of
accessories which can make quite a lot of difference in the comfort
level of the habitants.

a) The first and the most important is a good provision of artificial
lighting. This includes basic lighting as well as special decorative
lighting for decorative purposes.

b) Special provision for upholstery and linen. Small details such
as curtain rods, provision for bed canopies can make the room
extra decorative.

c) Use materials that are easy to clean and maintain. For example
if you are using PVC flooring sheets on top of standard tiled flooring,
is it washable? Think of what will happen if your child uses it

as a painting canvas.

The discussion above was an attempt to look for some universal
factor that can affect the comfort level of the users in a bedroom.

Finally the feeling which you get when you use your bedroom is
most important and is a good measure to decide the success factor
of the design project.

However it is important to note that these are not the only factors
that need to be looked upon, but I’m sure these can help as a
starting point for further creative thinking.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.
